Hitonari Yamano es un cazador de montaña retirado, un matagi, que se ha quedado viudo y ahora vive solo en el ámbito rural. Un día, encuentra una consola de videojuegos desechada en un vertido ilegal y se la lleva a casa. Un par de años después de poner en marcha el aparato e iniciar el juego FPS que llevaba dentro... su vida ha cambiado por completo.
