Powell & Makinen are masters of the gothic monster comic. Powell’s period writing involves mostly Victorian England and his characters are either historical figures or literary characters in the public domain. Makinen’s woodcut-inspired artwork captures London’s foggy nights, well-groomed English aristocrats and lower classes perfectly. Following the team’s success with Scarlet in Gaslight (Sherlock Holmes vs. Dracula) and A Case of Blind Fear (Sherlock Holmes vs. The Invisible Man), comes Ghosts of Dracula, where the king of vampires finds himself allied with the world’s most famous magician, Harry Houdini. When Houdini infiltrates a séance in order to reveal the medium as a fraud, he strikes up a friendship with another attendee—Count Dracula. Add several visiting monsters from hell and a cameo appearance from Abraham Van Helsing, and this is a perfect period spook story mixing real and fictional characters.
