Plot

Batman is carrying the grief of his recent losses - the death of Robin and the crippling of Barbara Gordon - and is acting in total solitude, barely making contact with his friend James Gordon. Alfred is concerned for him, as is Barbara, who has not seen him since she got out of hospital. Barbara is angry with Bruce for wallowing in his mistakes and convinces him that both he and her father need each other; they need a friend. Batman finally answers that Bat-signal and admits to Gordon that he wants to fade into the shadows; Gordon says that's fine, he can become an urban legend once more, so long as he comes when he's needed. The two men commiserate each other over their respective losses and part, still friends.
