Plot
A scientific experiment to create a kryptonite-powered engine goes disastrously wrong, unleashing a massive explosion that transforms all kryptonite on Earth into harmless iron. From the dimensional rift opened by the accident emerges Quarmer, a living sand creature that is a duplicate of Superman. The being possesses all of Superman's powers and memories but is made entirely of sentient sand, capable of reshaping itself at will and returning to life after being dispersed. As Superman battles this unique foe, he also undergoes a major life change: his new boss Morgan Edge reassigns Clark Kent from the Daily Planet to WGBS television as a news reporter. The issue marks the beginning of the Bronze Age of Superman, introducing a less powerful, more vulnerable Man of Steel.
