Ante todo, es una critica demoledora a la política de Reagan. Para mí, el mensaje de Miller es que, en una sociedad hedonista cuyas instituciones se desinteresan de los problemas sociales, es inevitable el ascenso de un individuo o grupo de individuos desquiciados que busquen resolver ese problema por fuera de las instituciones, probablemente de forma violenta. También es fascinante la representación de los jovenes que hace Miller, no son solo niños crecidos sin padres y sin futuro, son mentes facilmente influenciables por "el tío más duro del barrio". Todo esto vuelve a TDKR atemporal. Si a eso le sumamos una narrativa rompedora, no cabe duda de que es una obra maestra. Además, Miller no heroiza a Batman del todo. Bruce Wayne está completamente loco y se recalca varias veces en el cómic. Los problemas no se solucionan disfrazandose para repartir leña, si acaso eso los agrava El problema es que Miller a veces sí que lo heroiza y eso lleva a contradicciones peligrosas dentro de la obra.
