Considered a national treasure, the cartoons of The New Yorker are beloved, iconic images that have made us laugh at the social issues of the day and have defined a distinctly American sensibility. Since the magazine's debut in 1925, the cartoons have been a barometer of the human condition and have tweaked the nation's collective funnybone. Pasted to the refrigerator, tacked on the office bulletin board, or taped to a computer monitor... everyone seems to have a favorite.

This fall, all 68,647 cartoons will be published together for the first time in THE COMPLETE CARTOONS OF THE NEW YORKER (Black Dog & Leventhal; October 5, 2004; hardcover plus two CDs) edited by New Yorker cartoon editor Robert Mankoff and with a Foreword by editor-in-chief David Remnick. Over 2,000 selected cartoons will appear in the lavishly produced hardcover, and all 68,647 are featured on the two accompanying CD-ROMs (a digital anthology fully browsable by date, subject, and artist).
