The JLA has just finished a meeting when five familiar figures enter: Steve Trevor, Jean Loring, Hawkgirl, Midge, and Mera. Each approaches their respective hero — Wonder Woman, the Atom, Hawkman, Aquaman, and Snapper Carr — and delivers a kiss. But the visitors are fakes. They vanish, and the five heroes collapse, apparently dead.

The remaining five League members — Superman, Batman, the Flash, Green Lantern, and Green Arrow — are then attacked by a horde of cosmic monsters, each designed to exploit their specific weaknesses. A dragon with kryptonite teeth attacks Superman. A yellow griffin menaces Green Lantern. Despite the odds, the heroes work together and defeat the creatures, which fade into nothingness like the false lovers.

Tracking the source of the attack, the League discovers the villain behind it: Thomas Oscar Morrow, a futuristic criminal genius using a super-computer that can predict the future. Morrow animates trophies from the League's Souvenir Room, turning them into living weapons. Amazo attacks the Flash. Starro the Conqueror crushes Green Arrow. A light machine from Doctor Light consumes Green Lantern. One by one, the remaining heroes fall until the entire Justice League lies apparently dead. Morrow displays their bodies in individual niches, triumphant.

But the Red Tornado — Morrow's android creation, left for dead on Earth-Two — stirs awake. Using his spinning ability, he breaches the dimensional barrier between Earths and arrives at the League's headquarters. He deduces that the five heroes struck by the false kisses are not truly dead, only filled with futurenergy that can be counteracted by genuine affection. He brings their real loved ones to the Sanctuary, and one by one, the kisses restore Wonder Woman, the Atom, Hawkman, Aquaman, and Snapper Carr to life.

The revived heroes, joined by the Red Tornado, track Morrow to the dimensional void between Earth-One and Earth-Two. His ultimate scheme: to destroy the vibrational barriers separating the two Earths, causing a catastrophic collision that would annihilate both planets. Wonder Woman destroys his machinery while the Red Tornado confronts his creator. Morrow reveals the truth: the android's memories of being a Justice Society member were false implants. He is nothing but a machine.

Despite this devastating revelation, the Red Tornado refuses to let Morrow escape. The villain is captured and forced to revive the remaining League members. The Red Tornado returns to Earth-Two and does the same for the Justice Society. In gratitude, they offer him membership, but he declines. Having just learned he is not a man but a creation built for evil, he cannot simply accept a place among heroes. He departs alone, searching for his own identity and a place in the world he can truly call his own.
